Creating a demo site.

This is a step by stem of how to create a demo site from a currently live Joomla Site.

This was asked for a couple of staff to be able to use as they were afraid of messing up the live site.

  • The site is a joomla website
  • Running on a cPanel server
  • Where you have shell access
  1. Login to cPanel
  2. Go to Installatron Application Installer
    1. Choose Joomla and then Install this application
    2. Directory should be set to demo
    3. Administrator Username to your default
    4. Administrator Password  as needed
    5. Install
    6. (If you have previous used Installatron to create the Live website you could skip these steps and do a clone!)
  3. Login to shell
  4. Dump the mysql database from the live site.
  5. mysqldump -uuser database -ppassword > website.sql
    1. You find the database name from the
public $db = ‘site_jos1’; // DB database name of configuration.php of the live site.
  6. Now import this in to the new database
  7. mysql -uuser database -ppassword < website.sql
    1. You find the database name from the
public $db = ‘site_jos1’; // DB database name of configuration.php of the demo site.
  8. Now we need to copy some additional folders.
    1. /live/templates/your_template to /demo/templates
    2. /live/images to /demo/images
    3. Also may be /live/pdf to /demo/pdf

The power of Linux

Having a Linux workstation that stores all my pictures and files give the ability to run simple(ish) commands and get a a whole lot of work done in one sweep.

for file in *; do mv “$file” `echo $file | tr ‘ ‘ ‘_’` ; done

This simple script run at the Linux command line will look at every file in the current directory and changes it’s name replacing every ” ” space with an _.

Then

for f in *.pdf; do convert -thumbnail x200 -background white -alpha remove “$f”[0] “${f%.pdf}.png”; done
This simple script run at the Linux command line with ImageMagick installed will look at every PDF in the current directory and create a thumb nail that is 200 pixels high.
